WORK IN THAILAND
Work Permit & Labour
Working legally in Thailand requires more than just the right visa. A separate work permit is needed for almost any paid activity, and the type you apply for depends on your situation.
The most common routes include the Non-B visa and work permit for employees of Thai companies, BOI-sponsored work permits for staff of BOI-promoted businesses (processed at the One Step Service Center), and the Non-O (Thai spouse) work permit for foreigners married to a Thai national, which has lower requirements than the Non-B.
Each comes with its own eligibility criteria, documentation, and ongoing obligations. We help you identify the right path and handle the process from start to finish.

FAQs
Do I need a work permit if I already have a visa?
Yes. A visa and a work permit are separate documents issued by separate authorities. The visa is issued by immigration and permits you to stay in Thailand. The work permit is issued by the Department of Employment and permits you to work. Holding one does not grant the other.
Can I work in Thailand on a tourist visa?
No. A tourist visa does not permit employment of any kind. Working without a permit exposes both you and the business engaging you to penalties. If you have entered as a tourist and been offered a role, the position can usually be regularised, though the route depends on your nationality and the employer's status.
Can I apply for a work permit before I arrive in Thailand?
Yes. The WP3 process allows your employer to obtain approval while you are still abroad, which then supports your visa application at a Thai embassy or consulate. The WP1 application issues the permit itself once you have entered the country.
Can I work for more than one company on one work permit?
No. A work permit names the employer, the role and the place of work. Taking on a second employer, or moving to a materially different role, requires the permit to be amended or a further permit obtained.
Does my work permit expire at the same time as my visa?
Not automatically. The two are separate documents with separate renewals, usually aligned so they run together but not linked by default. Both must be kept valid, and they need to be renewed in the correct sequence. Letting one lapse puts the other at risk.
Can my spouse and children live in Thailand with me?
Yes. Dependants of a foreigner holding a primary visa can apply for a Non-O dependent visa, granted on the basis of your status rather than their own. It permits residence but not employment. A dependant who wants to work needs their own visa and work permit.
What is the 90 day report?
Foreigners staying in Thailand continuously must notify immigration of their current address every 90 days. Leaving the country and re-entering resets the count. It is a reporting obligation only and does not affect your visa status, but missing it draws a fine.
