WHO CAN APPLY

Personal Bank Account Applications

Both Thai nationals and foreigners are eligible to open a Thai bank account, but certain requirements must be met:

  1. Thai Nationals

Must present a valid Thai ID card and proof of address.

  2. Foreign Nationals

Must provide a valid passport, visa, proof of residence (e.g., a utility bill), and sometimes a work permit, depending on the type of account.

  3. DTV Visa Holders

Thai banks currently classify the DTV as a tourist visa, and are not opening new accounts for DTV holders. A longer-term visa, such as a Non-B, Non-O, or LTR, is required instead. We can advise on the visa route that would make an account possible.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Corporate Bank Account Applications

No two Thai banks approach corporate account opening the same way, and nor do two branches of the same bank. Most ask for the same core documents, but your nationality, your shareholding structure, and the branch itself can all add to them. We confirm exact requirements with your chosen branch before anything is prepared.

Personal documentation for all foreign shareholders, for background and beneficial ownership checks

    06

Three months of personal bank statements for each Thai shareholder, if foreign ownership reaches 50% or a foreign director holds signing authority

FAQs

Can a company with foreign shareholders open a Thai bank account?

Yes, though foreign ownership brings additional compliance checks. Banks now conduct beneficial ownership verification on all corporate applicants, foreign-owned or not, and companies with foreign directors or shareholders face closer scrutiny of the underlying capital.

What changed for company bank accounts in 2026?

Since January 2026, Thai shareholders in 49:51 joint ventures with foreign minority ownership, or companies with a foreign signatory director, must provide 3 months of personal bank statements rather than a simple balance letter, to demonstrate their invested capital is genuine.

Will every bank ask for the same documents?

No. Requirements vary between banks, and often between branches of the same bank, so a branch may ask for something beyond the standard list depending on your specific circumstances.

Does a foreign director need to be in Thailand to open the account?

Yes, this has to be done in person. Thai banks require an authorized director to physically attend, and will verify that they have the authority to open the account on the company's behalf.

Can any shareholder open the account?

No. The account must be opened by an authorized director, not simply any shareholder. The company's board resolution or meeting minutes need to name the director with this authority before the bank will proceed.

How long does it take to open a corporate account?

It varies by bank and by how complete your documentation is. Straightforward applications with foreign ownership already accounted for tend to move faster than ones requiring additional verification.
